I. BACKGROUND

Clean Air Asia is an international non-governmental organization leading the regional mission for better air quality, and healthier, more livable cities throughout Asia. Our mission is to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Asia and contribute to the development of a more sustainable, equitable and healthier region. We empower governments and cities by inspiring action and focusing efforts on the planning and implementation of solutions at scale, fostering regional cooperation to address issues of mutual concern, and ensuring the integration of air quality management across sectors and institutions.

Our work focuses on implementing solutions that reduce air pollution, its detrimental health impacts and mitigate the climate crisis. We do so by providing policy guidance, building capacity, and making a compelling case for action among stakeholders at city, national, and regional levels. Since 2008, we have been a United Nations-recognized partnership comprised of more than 250 organizations in Asia and internationally, with six Country Networks (Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam). Our headquarters are in Manila, Philippines, and we have offices in Beijing, China, and New Delhi, India.

Clean Air Asia is currently looking for interns interested in supporting the Pathways for Clean Air and Clean Energy Project, through which we provide support to the Governments of the Philippines and Vietnam in the revision and implementation of a more stringent emission standards for coal-fired power plants.

Ii. Job Purpose

Clean Air Asia has been accepting interns from all over the world since 2007 to provide both undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to improve their skills and experience working in a diverse environment. Previous interns appreciated the improved understanding on air quality and related topics, gained practical skills in knowledge management and project management, established friendships and contacts that could help in their future career plans. Previous interns include students or young professionals from Asia - China, Philippines, Singapore, and Sri Lanka - and outside Asia – France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States.

By the end of the internship, the intern is expected to have:

  • Better appreciation of Clean Air Asia’s work to promote better air quality and livable cities
  • Gained understanding of the organization’s approach to managing emissions from the energy sector, particularly the coal-fired power plant sector
  • Aligned and applied their academic background to Clean Air Asia's work

The intern will mainly work on the implementation of the Pathways for Clean Air and Energy Project in the Philippines and Vietnam. However, they may be assigned other relevant tasks under the Air Quality and Climate Change and Sustainable Transport Programs, as needed.

Iii. Responsibilities And Scope Of Work

Under the direct supervision of Clean Air Asia’s Energy Researcher, the intern will support the Pathways for Clean Air and Clean Energy Project implementation by:

  • Providing inputs to project activities handled by the Energy team. This includes conducting literature reviews on emission reduction from coal and other heavy-polluting industries, mapping and data analysis, policy research on emission reduction technologies and energy transition strategies, governance and operating models that include solutions to reduce emissions, capacity building, providing written inputs for the development of technical reports, and taking notes during meetings and workshops.
  • Assisting the team in conducting research and analysis and facilitating the provision of technical support for managing emissions from coal-fired power plants and other heavily polluting industries using the best international interventions.
  • Actively supporting the team in stakeholder engagements, both virtual and in-person, including during pre- and post-meeting activities.
  • Assisting in organizing and preparing materials for workshops, seminars, and training sessions related to energy transition and emissions reduction.
  • Reporting on recent news regarding selected topics related to energy transition on a weekly basis or as agreed upon with the supervisor or project team.
  • Undertaking other relevant tasks related to energy transition and emissions management as assigned by the supervisor or project team.
  • Providing support in identifying and coordinating with stakeholders for the regular work of the Energy team.
  • Undertaking any other responsibilities relevant to the implementation of Clean Air Asia activities

The intern may also perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or project team.

Iv. Eligibility Requirements And Criteria

  • A graduate or student in a relevant field such as environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, and other courses with strong data management and analysis background
  • Demonstrates excellent research and writing skills and great attention to detail
  • Has the ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural and multidisciplinary team
  • With an interest in the field of environmental policy and governance, air quality management, and climate change mitigation
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

V. DURATION, REMUNERATION And OTHER BENEFITS

The selected candidate will be appointed for 3 months, with possibility of extension based on funding and satisfactory performance. Clean Air Asia offers a modest allowance and flexible time schedule during the internship period but does not fund international travel or provide accommodation for the accepted intern. The internship is on a hybrid setup (face-to-face/on-site reporting and remote/work-from-home).
