Job Summary
The Market Portfolio Analytics Officer is responsible for delivering information and data driven insights to support commercial planning, operational and strategic decisions using market modelling techniques, data analytics, and domain knowledge.

Specific duties and responsibilities
Electricity Market Analysis, Forecasting and Simulation
- Develop and maintain sophisticated mathematical models and/or data-driven approaches that deliver the following: a) Long, medium-, and short-term market price forecasts b) Long, medium-, and long-term demand forecasts c) Supply side monitoring, assessment and projections; d) Portfolio volume projections; e) Contract volume projections; f) Generation capacity expansion simulation; g) Resource adequacy simulation studies; h) Market competition models
- Perform forecast diagnostics: monitor forecast performance, understand drivers of forecast deviations, and implement continuous improvements of forecasting methodologies
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of market model working assumptions, methodologies and results
Electricity Market and Portfolio Analytics
- Monitor electricity market performance and portfolio-related information through regular reporting and business intelligence tools. Develop, maintain and improve the end-to-end Electricity Market Analytics Platform
- Identify and monitor various factors that influence market dynamics including fuel, transmission, new plants, weather conditions, GOMP, etc. Ensure timely collection of this information and regular reporting through either ad-hoc reports or analytics dashboards
- Develop new analytics reports as required
- Develop and maintain efficient extract-transform-load (ETL) pipelines and data repositories
- Maintain necessary documentation related to data engineering and analytics processes and procedures
- Assist in resolving issues on quality of data sources (e.g. 3rd party data warehouse, WESM MIND Database access, poorly structured datasets etc.)
Commercial Planning / Strategic Decision Support
- Inform commercial planning decisions by engaging in exercises such as but not limited to: line rental analysis, medium term projections of budget preparation, volume projections for fuel procurement or pricing requirements, replacement power valuation, transmission flow analyses, analyses of contribution/fuel margins, optimal capacity mix recommendation, competitor behavior analysis assistance in monitoring and determination of optimal portfolio contract levels etc.
- Develop the use of predictive analytics and various supervised/unsupervised machine learning algorithms to inform planning and operational decisions such as but not limited to: solar forecasting improvement, short term demand projections, anomaly detection of transmission congestion, characterizing locational marginal prices, understanding of rental drivers etc.
Business Development/Investment Decision Support
- Develop a long-term view of market price and volumes plus sensitivities
- Conduct market analyses and ensure accurate and timely delivery of various market related information as required to assess new projects/initiatives
- Determine projected company’s market share against prescribed limits
- Contribute to assessing impacts of changes in market rules, design, regulation, or policies to market dynamics and consequently company portfolio
- Assist in navigating and understanding implications of regulatory changes
- Understand how policy initiatives affect market dynamics such as: incentives/subsidies on RE, targets of RE share in the gen mix, carbon tax, capacity markets, new markets
- Use data-driven insights to offer comments and help shape new rules, regulation, or policies in the industry
Communication and Reporting
- Communicate findings and insights to internal/external stakeholders. Activities may include preparation of memos, reports, presenting analysis and results and collaborating with various teams
Technology integration
- Identify and leverage the use of advanced technologies such as statistical machine learning, data analytics, and market simulation software to enhance the team’s capabilities
- Drive innovation in analytics capabilities and stay abreast of latest market modelling capability enhancements to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving energy landscape
Position Requirements (Basic Qualifications)
- Candidate must posses at least a Bachelor's/College Degree in Engineering, Science, Business, Applied Math, Statistics or related field
- 3-5 years’ experience in the Electricity Market
- Experience in the use of market modelling tools such as PLEXOS or Aurora preferred but not required
- Knowledge in end-to-end deployment of analytics projects
- In-depth knowledge of energy market regulations, policies, and industry trends
- Advanced MS Excel proficiency
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as R, Prophet, VB, MATLAB, or Stata
- Advanced knowledge in Statistics, Financial, and Economic Analysis
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to convey complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point
